About Stage & Stalls

Stage & Stalls began life in 2013 as a student-led, theatre-focussed print publication for the University of Bath from a handful of theatre obsessives sharing reviews, recommendations and backstage enthusiasm wherever our audience happened to be scrolling. What started as a passion project between lectures grew, show by show, into something with a life of its own.

In 2023 we rebranded as Stage & Stalls Magazine, a once-monthly print magazine sharpening our focus on what we've always loved most: theatre and live entertainment across Britain and Ireland. The name says it all. the stage, where it all happens, and the stalls, where we sit alongside you.

In 2025 we've pivoted. Print is hard, but we love writing and we love sharing. My colleagues, Josh, Caroline and I decided to set-up this magazine site. A place for all our readers to congregate, with the same content and same intimacy as the print magazine but with the ability to keep publishing.

Who we are

We're a small, independent team of three, led by editor Bea Sterling. Bea graduated in musical theatre and has been besotted with the art form since childhood, the kind of girl who wore out cast recordings and knew the interval running times of the West End by heart. That lifelong love, backed by formal training, shapes everything we publish: reviews written by people who understand what it takes to put a show on its feet.

What we do

We travel the full length of the UK and Ireland to experience live theatre first-hand, from West End houses and grand old variety palaces to festival tents, studio spaces and rooms above pubs. We review what we see honestly, and where we can, we champion the acts and artists who make live performance the most exciting art form there is. Small companies, emerging performers, Fringe debuts, if it's good, we want more people to know about it.

Our independence

Stage & Stalls is an independent publication. We are not affiliated with, owned by, or connected to any performer, production company, venue, promoter or PR agency featured on this site. Our rankings and reviews are the editorial team's own; no placement in our coverage is ever paid for or requested. Where a preview draws on promotional materials or press releases supplied by a show's publicists, we say so clearly in the article.
